As an education professional, what can you do for students growing up in a world where refugees are framed as a problem, and "polarization" is used to avoid meaningful discussions? A world where the far-right is increasingly normalized, asylum seeker centers are attacked, and debates about refugee issues rarely focus on values like solidarity and safety, or on disruptive asylum policies?
On June 15, Stichting Stadslab and the Refugee Welcome Week Netherlands will bring together teachers, school leaders, and other education stakeholders for an inspiring and in-depth meeting. Using excerpts from the documentary 'Strijders voor Gelijke Rechten' (Fighters for Equal Rights), a historical example of how asylum seekers and migrant workers strengthened the Dutch rule of law, you will engage in discussion together. The documentary serves as a powerful starting point for conversations about solidarity, equality, and justice in your classroom.
What is the added value of embracing diversity for our society? And what does that mean for what and how you teach about refugees?
Speakers:
Nilufer Oder (Nilstories.nl), director of 'Strijders voor Gelijke Rechten';
Sky, a grassroots activist advocating for the rights of queer refugees and Palestine.
Shadi Nikshomar will moderate the meeting. After the program, we will all sit down for a meal together.
