The annual Vreugdevuur (bonfire) in Floradorp had been under discussion for some time, because the Vreugdevuur compromised the safety of local residents. The decision that the fire could not go on, evoked strong emotions, resulting in disturbances in the run-up to New Year's Eve.
A danger for one person, a passion for the other. During the Political Table in A Lab, stakeholders from the Flora4Life Foundation, also residents of Floradorp, spoke to local politicians. Residents shared their experiences and told them what the Vreugdevuur means to them. In smaller groups, they had a good conversation about how old and new can be meaningful for everyone, what place the Vreugdevuur has in the North tradition and culture, and what role local politics can play in this.
It was incredibly valuable to bring people who wouldn't normally meet each other together and to be able to have an open and constructive conversation with each other. — Jeroen Boerma
The conversation provided space to hear different perspectives, in a setting without a press. Not opposite each other, but sitting at the table together, listening to each other's stories. Contact details were exchanged and agreements were made to continue the conversation in the neighborhood.
In A Lab, we welcome encounter and connection. An evening like this makes the positive effect of connecting very visible and shows that it is important to always be curious about others.
