What is it like to be an entrepreneur, as a woman in Amsterdam North? To better understand what's going on, Think+Do (Albert, Workhotel) set out to investigate on behalf of the Municipality of Amsterdam. In this project, several A Lab members worked together, from different disciplines. What about female entrepreneurship in North? What are experiences, what are the differences between men and women and what do they encounter as entrepreneurs in Noord?

“I received no funding because my husband earned too little.”

For this study three A Lab members collaborated. Think+Do (Albert, Lab 006), Visual Notes (Wytze, Lab 001) and Zeppa (Annelies, Lab008) involved. Albert carried out the research and interviewed entrepreneurs from North, with companies in a wide range of sectors. This shows very clearly that female entrepreneurs are highly resilient, work well together and often contribute positively to society with their company. But... they still run into problems too often. For example, they are less likely to receive funding, they are taken less seriously and their access to networks is also more limited. Based on the interviews, various business profiles were developed.

The research, interviews and results were enhanced by the conversation visualizations and illustrations by Wytze Veenstra ( @visualnotesnl). @zeppa_amsterdam provided the clean and clear design of the report. The research results prompted the North district to Calamity Jane one campaign full of developing role models that encourage and normalize female entrepreneurship. Because it's time for a fairer and more inclusive business climate. Curious about the research and campaign? Read here more.
