Dutch supermarkets are among the European leaders when it comes to climate plans and the switch to more plant-based food. But behind these ambitious goals, there is a less rosy reality: emissions are barely falling and, in some cases, even rising.

The latest European study by A Lab residents and think tank Questionmark (based in Lab209) shows that parties such as Albert Heijn, Lidl and Jumbo are taking steps towards a more sustainable food system, but are still far from on track to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. At the same time, supermarkets play a key role in the protein transition: they determine what we eat, what is affordable and what is visible on the shelves.
