Construction work in A Lab - Updates

On a biweekly basis, we will post an update with the construction work in the coming weeks and when we expect any inconveniences. Updates are always accompanied by an app in the A Lab Whatsapp Group or an email.

Current projects:

- Renovation of basement studio space The work is expected to be completed in November. After this, A Lab will also make some adjustments and investments. The goal is to have the space operational by January 1, 2026.

- Repair of jointing on the Overhoeksplein / Badhuiskade facade Work will start at the end of August 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

General policy for construction works in A Lab

• The area of the work has been closed and classified as a construction site. Access is not allowed unless accompanied by one of the builders or someone from the A Lab Team.
• Substantial noise may be made on weekdays between 07:00 h and 10:00 h. Outside these times, noise pollution is not allowed unless reported at least two weeks in advance.

Planned work in the coming weeks:

Week Mon 24 November – Sun 30 November

Coating basement floor – Monday 24 November
The new coating layer is walkable, but protective floor covering will be placed to avoid putting too much pressure on the floor.

Applying poured floor in studio space
In the new studio, the poured floor will be installed. From Monday 24 November until Monday 1 December, the floor will not be walkable.

Sewer works
Under the new studio space, old pipes will be removed and new pipes will be installed.
Expected disturbance: drilling work between 07:00 and 10:00 in the morning.

Week Mon 1 December – Sun 7 December

Facade drilling work – Mon 1 December to Fri 5 December
At the front of the building, joints will be drilled out and façade repair work will be carried out.
Expected disturbance: drilling with significant noise between 07:00 and 09:00.

Installing trusses and sound/light in new studio – Tue 2 December to Thu 4 December
In the new studio space, trusses will be installed and light/sound equipment will be mounted.
Expected disturbance: occasional drilling.

Nice work, but what are they for? In order to connect and program more in the coming years, it is essential that we develop this enclosed space. The great thing is that we are already optimising the space during the renovation according to how it will be used later on. In this studio, we can provide the space for exciting cultural programming, such as A Lab Cult, as well as other activities from the building and neighborhood. This could include rehearsal space for theatre companies, music lessons and local bingo, among lots of other things. It's also great that the space will have its own toilet block and that the rest of the basement can be closed off during evening activities. This will also reduce visitor turnover in the rest of the building.
